Ashley Cole and Michael Carrick were the big-name omissions as Roy Hodgson named his 23-man England squad for the World Cup.

The Three Lions manager has included exciting youngsters Ross Barkley, Jordan Henderson, Luke Shaw and Raheem Sterling, whilst captain Steven Gerrard will be joined by fellow veteran Frank Lampard.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction to Hodgson’s squad announcement.

Omitted Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick (‏@carras16) is gutted to be on the standby list: “Disappointed to be left out of the squad, World Cups are special and to miss out hurts. Want to wish the boys the very best of luck.”

Former Saints man Billy Sharp (‏@billysharp10) is pleased for his former team-mates: “Absolutely buzzing for Adz , Lambo and @LukeShaw3 congrats and good luck.”

Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan (‏@MichaelVaughan) backs Hodgson’s 23-man squad: “#Delighted with the England squad…Don’t expect them to win it but they should go with no fear and gain loads of experience… #Uneverknow”

Ex-Stoke City man Danny Higginbotham (‏@Higginbotham05) is excited by the attacking talent and youth in the squad: “Love the fact this England squad is full of youth and also full of pace. Something England have missed for years.”

Charlton youngster Jack Munns ‏(@jack_munns) clearly doesn’t rate the two United defenders in the squad: “Jones and Smalling going gives everyone round the country hope of one day making a WC squad!!”

Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler (‏@DavidMeyler7) is entertained by some errant tweeters: “Love how people are tweeting why isn’t Seamie Coleman in the England squad.”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) tweets his thoughts: “England’s squad: Bags of attacking talent, much unproven but exciting nevertheless, blatantly short defensively through the centre. Roy is a sagacious old owl. Supremely intelligent man. Handles the media with charm, tact, respect and caution.”

Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker (‏@kylewalker2) is disappointed to miss out due to injury: “Gutted to miss the World Cup because of my injury. I’m still a few weeks away from being fit so I understand why the gaffer has left me out We’re taking a strong group of players to Brazil. All the best boys, I’ll be supporting you!”

Finally, West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster ‏(@BenFoster) is thrilled to receive the nod from his former Baggies manager: “Thanks for the nice messages all, huge honour and achievement for me to be involved, something to tell the grandkids about! Can’t wait.”
