Chelsea 0 Man City 0: Give Benítez a chance, Cech urges Blues fans
Chelsea 0 Man City 0: Petr Cech calls on Blues fans to give new manager Rafael Benítez "a chance" after hostile reception
Petr Cech urged Chelsea fans to give new interim manager Rafael Benítez the chance to prove he is “worthy” of the job after the Stamford Bridge faithful gave the Spaniard a hostile reception in Sunday’s goalless draw with Manchester City.
Benítez’s arrival was met with an angry response from Blues supporters as a result of the fierce rivalry with them during his time in charge of Liverpool.
The former Valencia head coach was greeted with a deafening chorus of jeers as he took up his position in the technical area, before watching his new team play out a stalemate with the defending champions.
“Unfortunately you can’t change history,” Cech told Sky Sports after the draw which sees Chelsea stay in fourth place. “You never know what’s going to happen in the future.
“We had a lot of rivalry against Liverpool and it [the reception] comes from there but he’s here to try and change things and progress, and he needs to get that chance to prove that he’s worthy of a chance.”
The Chelsea goalkeeper was upset to see Roberto Di Matteo axed last week and admits the players must accept part of the blame for the Italian’s dismissal.
“It’s always bad news [when a manager is sacked] for you as a player because you’re responsible for the situation as well,” he said.
“We are all in the same boat and if we don’t do well then it’s the players’ responsibility as well as the manager’s.
“It’s happened again but we need to put things right and today we have a good point. Hopefully we can win on Wednesday [against Fulham] and start from there.”
