Rafael Benítez insisted Chelsea were denied a “very clear” penalty for Vincent Kompany’s challenge on Fernando Torres after Manchester City progressed to the FA Cup final at the Blues’ expense.

The Citizens took the lead in the 35th minute when Samir Nasri fired home from close range, and Sergio Aguero doubled his side’s advantage when his looping header beat Petr Cech just after half-time.

Demba Ba’s shot on the turn in the 66th minute gave Chelsea hope of mounting a comeback at Wembley.

And with the semi-final hanging in the balance, Torres appeared to be fouled by Kompany in the box as they wrestled for the ball, but referee Chris Foy waved play on despite Chelsea’s protests.

“Was it a penalty? Yes clearly. Very clearly. Very clear, you can see the pictures. We have two situations like that in the second half,” said Benítez.

“But we played against a very good team, if they had scored another the game would have been over. But we keep going and we had chances to be back in the game so these decisions were very important.”

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, whose side will face Wigan in the final on 11 May, felt that his side should have been awarded a free-kick after the incident.

“For me it was a foul for us,” said Mancini. “[And] it was a penalty for us when Yaya Toure went to shoot in the second half.”
