Chelsea 1 Schalke 1: Jose Mourinho frustrated by missed chances
Chelsea 1 Schalke 1: Jose Mourinho admits his frustrations with some wasteful finishing from his Blues side
Jose Mourinho admitted he was frustrated with Chelsea’s wasteful finishing after Schalke left Stamford Bridge with a point from their Champions League group-stage opener.
Summer signing Cesc Fabregas scored his first Chelsea goal in the 11th minute to put the home side in control of the Group G clash before missing a clear-cut chance to double the Blues’s lead before half-time.
Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard fired wide, too, as Schalke slowly grew into the European encounter in west London, and the Bundesliga side levelled through Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with 28 minutes remaining.
Whilst Mourinho was pleased with Chelsea’s response after the setback, the Blues manager felt the game should have been out of Schalke’s reach before the Dutch striker’s second-half equaliser.
“I’m frustrated because we had the early goal,” Mourinho told his post-match news conference.
“We had very good chances to score the 2-0 and after the 1-1, we had a fantastic reaction and chances to win the game.
“But that’s football, that’s Champions League. Schalke come to get the points and they found themselves with the 1-1 and the fought hard to keep the result.
“They had players making fantastic defensive clearances on the goal-line. Congratulations to them because they got their objective.
“A little bit of frustration for us, because we did everything to get the win but couldn’t.”
