Vincent Kompany denied Manchester City are favourites to win the Premier League title after the defending champions claimed victory over 10-man Chelsea in the Community Shield at Villa Park.

Fernando Torres put Chelsea ahead before Branislav Ivanovic received a red card for a dangerous tackle on the stroke of half-time, and Yaya Toure levelled the tie in the 53rd minute, guiding an impressive strike past Petr Cech.

Carlos Tevez then netted a spectacular effort to hand Roberto Mancini’s side the lead, and Samir Nasri added a third shortly after to secure the Eastlands outfit’s first trophy of the season, with Ryan Bertrand scoring a late consolation for the Blues.

City captain Kompany refused to get carried away after the victory, and is expecting the Citizens to face a testing challenge in their bid to retain their league crown.

“It’s going to be a tough league campaign,” Kompany told ITV1. “As you can see, Chelsea had a lot of qualities as well. It’s going to be a very interesting season again.

“I wouldn’t say so [City are favourites]. It doesn’t matter really. As long as we improve on last season again, I’ll be very happy.”

Kompany also refused to be drawn on Tevez’s potential contribution to City’s title bid this season, with the centre-half insisting the success of the club is more important than any individual.

“I couldn’t care less [if Carlos Tevez makes the headlines for the right reasons this season] as long as the club wins trophies and we build on what we’re doing here – I’ll be very happy,” he added.

Mancini’s side welcome newly-promoted Southampton to the Etihad Stadium in their opening game of the league campaign on 19 August.
