Rafael Benítez was pleased to prove Chelsea’s detractors wrong after the Blues moved back into third place with victory over Paolo Di Canio’s Sunderland.

Cesar Azpilicueta’s own goal gave the Black Cats the lead just before half-time in the first game of Di Canio’s reign as boss since the Italian’s appointment last weekend.

But the west Londoners fought back to win as Matt Kilgallon turned the ball past his own goalkeeper, and Branislav Ivanovic touched in David Luiz’s shot.

Chelsea were in fifth place heading into the game but are now back up to third and level on points with Tottenham, who have played a game more than their London rivals.

“Today you could see some players a little but tired but still we have quality and we can get results,” said the Chelsea interim boss. “That is the priority now – try to pick the right team for every game and try to win.

“Two or three days before it was a crisis, two hours before the game it was the end of the world and now we are in the top three again.

“I think the media works too quickly; everything is too fast. We have to settle down, analyse things and be more relaxed.”

The defeat leaves Sunderland in 17th place in the table and only above Wigan on goal difference.
