Chelsea 3 Schalke 0: Jose Mourinho believes the Blues are on the brink of reaching the Champions League knockout stage
Jose Mourinho declared Chelsea are on the brink of the Champions League knockout stage after the Blues were emphatic winners against Schalke at Stamford Bridge.
Samuel Eto’o scored either side of half-time to calm Chelsea nerves after an edgy start in west London before substitute Demba Ba polished of the victory which sees the Blues move three points clear of the German side in Group E.
“We showed big maturity after the defeat on Saturday,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.
“We were quite lucky because they didn’t score a couple of early chances but after that, we played quite well.
“The team was very stable and we kept possession in a very comfortable way.”
He added: “Everybody defended well, especially the wingers against the two full-backs. We need that to keep our balance. When we recovered the ball, we were always aggressive.
“The important thing for us is that we’re almost there.”
Julian Draxler and Adam Szalai both spurned early chances before Eto’o was rewarded for his tenacious play as Timo Hildebrand’s hurried clearance deflected off the striker and into his own net.
And Mourinho revealed he had urged the Cameroon international to put pressure on the shot stopper ahead of the Champions League clash after facing Hildebrand during spells in charge of Porto and Real Madrid.
“I know the goalkeeper form Portugal and Spain. We know that Schalke like to play back passes and likes to play from the back with the goalkeeper. So Samuel was clever in the way that he attacked the goalkeeper,” added Mourinho.
