Chelsea 6 Nordsjaelland 1: Rafael Benítez insists he was thrilled with his side's display display despite Champions League exit
Rafael Benítez was thrilled with his side’s performance against Nordsjaelland, despite watching Chelsea become the first holders to crash out of the Champions League at the group stage.
The interim manager’s first victory in charge of the Blues was rendered meaningless as the west Londoners were parachuted down into the Europa League despite a six-goal win at Stamford Bridge.
A David Luiz penalty set Chelsea on their way before a brace from Fernando Torres either side of Gary Gahill’s strike put the Blues 4-1 up after Joshua John had netted for the visitors.
Juan Mata and Oscar then added gloss to the scoreline, but the Blues still suffered an early exit as a result of Juventus’ 1-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk.
“I was always sure about the quality of the players, the commitment of the players, today we could see their intensity,” Benítez told Sky Sports.
“For me tonight was the confirmation of everything I was watching in the training sessions. The main thing with Fernando Torres is that if we create chances, he will score goals.
“I’m sure if we play at the level we did tonight, we can do whatever we want [this season].”
