Chelsea added the FA Cup to their Premier League title as they narrowly defeated Portsmouth at Wembley.

Didier Drogba’s superb free kick was all that separated the two teams after both sides missed spot kicks in the second half.

In an enthralling first half Chelsea struck the woodwork on five occasions, the most notable chance falling to Salomon Kalou when the Ivory Coast striker smashed the ball of the crossbar from six yards out.

Portsmouth did manufacture some openings of their own with Frederic Piquionne  directing a wayward shot towards goal forcing Petr Cech to make an instinctive save.

Despite the overwhelming task facing the relegated Pompey, the south coast club continued to efficiently keep the lethal Chelsea attack at bay.

The turning point of the match came when substitute Juliano Belletti fouled Aruna Dindane in the penalty area.

Kevin-Prince Boateng, who had missed two penalties during the League campaign, assumed spot kick responsibility for Portsmouth, but heartbreakingly for Pompey fans his tame effort was easily blocked by the feet of Cech.

And just minutes later Drogba showed unerring accuracy as he stroked home a free kick with Pompey captain David James helpless to prevent his team falling behind. It marked the 32-year-old’s sixth ever goal at Wembley, thus continuing his love affair with the national stadium.

The newly-crowned League champions had deservedly earned their lead and it was inevitable, with the wealth of experience at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal, that the domestic double would be sealed.

Frank Lampard missed a penalty in the dying moments and the Blues held on to secure the win.

An ecstatic John Terry led his team-mates up the famous steps to collect the the club’s sixth FA Cup marking Chelsea’s first double in it’s 105-year history.
