Jose Mourinho has spoken of his admiration for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal ahead of the Gunners manager’s 1,000th game in charge of the north London side.

The 64-year-old’s side make the short trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday as Arsenal bid to cut Chelsea’s lead to a single point at the top of the Premier League table.

Mourinho rekindled his war of words with Wenger earlier this season after branding the Gunners manager a “specialist in failure” in reference to Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought.

And the Chelsea boss commended Wenger on his remarkable feat as well as praising Arsenal for sticking by the Frenchman despite many “difficult moments” during his reign.

“I admire him and I admire Arsenal because it is not possible to have 1,000 games unless the club is also a fantastic club in the way they support a manager especially in the bad moments and especially when the bad moments were quite a lot,” Mourinho told his pre-match media conference.

“So I admire the manager and I admire the club.”

Mourinho has masterminded Chelsea’s Premier League title bid this season following a return to the Blues in June after ending his first spell in charge of the west London side in 2007.

And the 51-year-old, who has previously managed Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, admitted he would like to reach 500 games in charge of Chelsea.

“I would like [to reach 1,000 games] but it is very, very difficult,” he said. “It was always difficult and in modern football it is even more difficult.

“If I can accumulate my first three-and-a-half years with Chelsea and this spell, I have a few. Let’s see if I can reach not 1,000, but 500 – it would be fantastic.”
