Jamie Redknapp explains why Chelsea signing must start v Burnley
Former Liverpool and Tottenham captain Jamie Redknapp wants Chelsea to start with Alvaro Morata against Burnley on Saturday
Jamie Redknapp has urged Antonio Conte to pick Alvaro Morata for Chelsea’s home clash against Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues were initially linked with a move to re-sign Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window after Conte told Diego Costa that he is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
However, Manchester United managed to hijack Chelsea’s deal for Lukaku and the Belgium international completed a £75m switch to Old Trafford in July.
Chelsea were forced to rethink their transfer plans and the Premier League champions signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid last month.
Conte opted to start Morata from the bench in the Community Shield last weekend before the Spanish striker came off the bench at Wembley.
The 24-year-old missed his spot-kick in the penalty shootout as Arsenal managed to beat Chelsea at the home of English football for the second time in 2017.
Chelsea will start the defence of their Premier League crown with a home clash against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Former Liverpool and Tottenham captain Redknapp believes it is important that Conte names Morata in his starting line-up to allow the new signing get off the mark in the Chelsea team.
“I hope Conte starts Morata at the weekend. It’s a big occasion. First game of the season,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“No disrespect to Burnley, he needs to get off to a good start. Otherwise Chelsea fans will be thinking, ‘what have they done here?’.
“The young man is under a bit of pressure and I hope he starts well for his sake.”
