Steven Gerrard reacts to Chelsea FC’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona
The Liverpool FC legend admits Chelsea FC were unlucky that mistake spoiled an otherwise perfect performance against Barcelona
Steven Gerrard admits Chelsea FC were unfortunate one mistake spoiled a near “perfect performance” after Lionel Messi rescued a 1-1 draw for Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Premier League title holders welcomed the La Liga leaders in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at Stamford Bridge fresh from a 4-0 win over Championship side Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round last week.
Chelsea FC boss Antonio Conte started Willian for just the third time in the Champions League this season and the playmaker hit the woodwork twice in the first half in an energetic performance from the South American.
The Brazil international finally got his goal in the 62nd minute when Willian placed a precise finish into the net to give Chelsea FC a precious lead in the Champions League clash.
However, Andreas Christensen’s sloppy pass was intercepted by Andres Iniesta and the Spanish legend teed up Messi to equaliser with 18 minutes to go at Stamford Bridge.
Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard felt that Chelsea FC were unlucky that one mistake cost them a vital aggregate lead ahead of the second leg.
“It was fascinating and Chelsea nearly got the perfect performance,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“I think they lost control for a couple of minutes. They nearly gave away a penalty with Suarez and then the mistake came from Christensen – and they were punished.”
Chelsea FC are looking to win the Champions League crown for the first time since 2012.
