Graeme Souness believes David Luiz can’t be trusted at the heart of the Chelsea FC defence.

The Brazil international fell out of favour under Italian head coach Antonio Conte in the 2017-18 Premier League season to raise questions about Luiz’s long-term future.

Luiz, though, had a reprieve in the summer after former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri replaced Antonio Conte at the Stamford Bridge outfit ahead of the new season.

The Brazilian star has started all three of Chelsea FC’s games so far after victories over Huddersfield Town, Arsenal and Newcastle United to keep pace with Premier League leaders Liverpool FC.

Chelsea FC were 2-1 winners against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon after DeAndre Yedlin scored an own goal in the 87th minute to secure three points.

Former Liverpool FC captain Souness believes Sarri can’t afford to play Luiz in his back four following a positive start to the Premier League season for the west London side.

“We’ve seen him in a back four,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“His lack of concentration, he’s rash at times. When he’s in a three he’s less exposed.

“Yeah I would (be nervous), in a nutshell. I think he’s got that in his locker, he wants to show how clever he is at times.

“I think if you get it wrong as a centre-half, it generally leads to shots at your goal.

“He worries me, yeah.”

Chelsea FC finished in fifth spot in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League place for the second successive season.

The Blues signed Jorginho, Rob Green, Mateo Kovacic and Kepa in the 2018 summer transfer window.
