Graeme Souness says Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard has the “most difficult job” in the Roman Abramovich era at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues legend was denied a first win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon after Mason Mount’s seventh-minute opener was cancelled out by Wilfred Ndidi in the second half.
Chelsea FC have failed to win any of their opening three competitive games under Lampard following a 4-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend and a defeat by Liverpool FC in the Uefa Super Cup.
Lampard was appointed as Maurizio Sarri’s replacement in the summer after the Italian head coach opted to leave the Europa League winners to take over the reins of Juventus.
The former England international lost Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and Lampard was unable to sign any players due to a two window transfer ban handed out by Fifa.
Former Liverpool FC captain Souness has admitted that he is worried about Lampard at Chelsea FC given the size of the job at the west London outfit this term.
“I think this is the most difficult job for a Chelsea manager since Roman Abramovich took over the club,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“The owner appears to have lost interest through circumstances not of his own making, but that’s a factor I think.
“The transfer ban is also a major issue and losing arguably one of the best players in the world [Eden Hazard], or certainly the best player in the Premier League over the last five or six years, it’s not easy.
“He needs time and you can’t be judging Frank Lampard on what you see now – this is what he’s inherited. There’s not a lot wrong with them, just people being slightly different at vital times and scoring more goals.
“When this team are on the front foot, they’re fabulous to watch. But when the game goes the other way, there are not a lot of people who can sense that danger to say ‘let’s be difficult to play against’. We’ve seen it twice now in succession – at Old Trafford and today.”
Chelsea FC will take on promoted side Norwich City in their next Premier League fixture at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues are in 15th place in the Premier League after conceding five goals in their opening two Premier League games.
