Frank Lampard sheds light on his philosophy at Chelsea FC
Frank Lampard has revealed that his big idea at Chelsea FC is to get the Blues to train how they play.
The former England international took over the reins from Maurizio Sarri earlier this summer after the Italian head coach returned to Serie A with champions Juventus.
Lampard’s appointment raised eyebrows considering that he has only one season of management under his belt – but the Chelsea FC manager did lead Derby County to the Championship play-off final but the Rams lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Chelsea FC were unable to sign new players in the summer transfer window after the Europa League winners were handed a transfer ban by Fifa earlier this year.
Lampard’s ability to improve his squad with new additions was limited due to the transfer ban but Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic did arrive on deals that were agreed earlier this summer.
Therefore, the Blues manager has been working with the current crop on the training field rather than bringing in some marquee signings ahead of the new campaign.
Speaking to Chelsea FC’s website about his mantra, Lampard said:
“My big idea is how we train.
“I want us to train how we want to play, to replicate that, even if I don’t think you can turn the switch on and off when you play.
“I want energy in my team. I want us to have possession of the ball. We have players who have the quality to handle the ball, but I don’t want it for possession’s sake. I want us to be an exciting team to watch so we can move the ball through the pitch quickly, and create chances.
“Then of course we have to be an aggressive team off the ball. We have to be a team who teams don’t like playing against because of how hard we work off the ball, and don’t like playing us because we’re really good on the ball. You can always strive for more in both departments.”
Chelsea FC will take on Champions League winners Liverpool FC in the Uefa Super Cup final.
The Blues will be looking to finish in the top four for the second successive season.
