Mateo Kovacic: Frank Lampard giving Chelsea FC star more freedom
Mateo Kovacic sheds light on his new role in the Chelsea FC team under Frank Lampard
Mateo Kovacic has revealed that Frank Lampard is giving the Croatia international more creative freedom than his predecessor Maurizio Sarri last season.
The Croatian midfielder was handed a starting role in the Chelsea FC team for their trip to promoted side Norwich City at Carrow Road at Saturday lunchtime.
Kovacic produced an impressive performance in the middle of the park as Tammy Abraham scored either side of half-time to help Chelsea FC ease to a 3-2 win over Norwich.
The Blues signed Kovacic in a permanent deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer after the 25-year-old spent the 2018-19 season on loan.
Kovacic failed to score in 32 games in the Premier League last term in a decent first campaign in the English top flight.
However, the World Cup finalist has shown more adventure in the current campaign as part of Lampard’s team.
And Kovacic has now opened up about his new role in the Chelsea FC team under Lampard.
“He gives me more freedom and I can take the ball and go forward. I feel good,” Kovacic is quoted as saying by Metro.
“A good connection with the coach and all the team. I am a Chelsea player now so I feel better about that. Last year was only a loan. I feel better and more confident than last year.
“It makes me feel more relaxed as last year was difficult and I needed to prove myself. Last year was also good, not perfect, this year I started well and I hope to continue like that.
“I am missing some part of my game and I can improve and get better, but I think it will come for sure.”
The Croatia international scored three times in 109 games in all competitions during his three-season stay at Real Madrid.
Chelsea FC finished in third place in the Premier League table and won the Europa League title last term.
The Blues will take on Sheffield United in their next Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
