Mateo Kovacic is a much-improved player since Frank Lampard’s appointment at Chelsea FC, according to BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks.

The Croatia international started alongside Jorginho in the middle of the park for Chelsea FC’s trip to Burnley on Saturday evening.

Kovacic helped to shield the Blues defence at Turf Moor before Burnley scored late consolation goals in Chelsea FC’s 4-2 win.

The Chelsea FC number 17 finished with 92 per cent pass completion, while the Croatian completed three dribbles and won four tackles.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a key player under Lampard despite being underwhelming throughout most of his loan spell at Chelsea FC last term.

Kovacic completed a permanent move to the Blues in the summer from Real Madrid despite Maurizio Sarri’s departure.

BBC Sport pundit Crooks believes Lampard has managed to get the best out of Fabinho over the past couple of months.

“I normally don’t care for statistics – they are for statisticians – but when I saw the pass rate for Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho against Burnley I suddenly paid attention,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“The performance of Kovacic in particular has been a revelation since the departure of Maurizio Sarri and the arrival of Lampard. The way he used the ball to cut Burnley to shreds was cruel at times.

“It’s hardly surprising Chelsea fans are enjoying their football so much these days.

“They have developed a generation of players desperate to play for a manager who, along with his players, are going places.”

Kovacic made two assists in 32 games in the Premier League last term.

The Croatian midfielder has already created one goal in the top flight this season.

Chelsea FC are in fourth place in the Premier League table and four points ahead of the chasing pack.

The Blues will make the short trip across the English capital to Watford in their next Premier League game on Saturday evening.
