Pat Nevin has questioned why Chelsea FC centre-half David Luiz tends to get more criticism than some of his fellow Premier League defenders.

The Brazil international produced an influential performance in Chelsea FC’s 2-0 win against defending Premier League champions Manchester City last Sunday.

Not only did Luiz marshal Maurizio Sarri’s defence to keep a clean sheet, but the South American star scored Chelsea FC’s second goal with an angled header.

Luiz has been ever-present in the Chelsea FC defence alongside Antonio Rudiger this season since Sarri took over the reins from Antonio Conte in the summer.

The former world record defender was part of the Chelsea FC team that won the Premier League in Conte’s first season at the west London side.

However, Conte dropped Luiz during his second campaign in charge to fuel talk of a potential move away from Stamford Bridge for the second time.

Luiz has often been portrayed as an erratic defender, while others have suggested his best position is in the middle of the park.

Former Chelsea FC winger Nevin has questioned why Luiz is subjected to such regular criticism, suggesting that his nationality could have something to do with it.

“What it is with David Luiz and his detractors?” Nevin told Chelsea FC’s website.

“Other defenders make mistakes but they aren’t routinely dismissed and ridiculed in the media, and specifically on TV and radio, by former players who are now pundits.

“I do that job too, so I sometimes ask those guys what their problem is and they truly believe they are just being honest. I suspect there are a few reasons why they are unfair on our Brazilian centre-back.

“First of all is the fact that he is a ‘Brazilian’ centre-back! He is not an old-school British stopper who is only concerned with defending, tackling, marking and violently going through the back of a few soft strikers and claiming it is just a ‘reducer’.

“He in fact is a real footballer, a talented one at that, and this sticks in the throats of a few whose world view of the position is a narrow-minded Anglo-Saxon one. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it jealousy, but probably only because I am too polite, but it is an insular state of mind.

“There is also the fact that some fans and pundits nailed their colours to the mast early and laughed from that vantage point when there was a feeding frenzy on David Luiz and they aren’t brave enough to climb down and admit his qualities when they subsequently show through.”

Luiz has scored one goal in 15 games in the Premier League so far, while the Brazilian has only been booked once to highlight his improved disciplinary record.
