Frank Lampard pinpoints what Willian needs to do better at Chelsea FC
The Chelsea FC legend challenges Willian to find a greater level of consistency at Stamford Bridge
Frank Lampard believes Willian needs to be more consistent in the Chelsea FC team to tie down a regular starting spot.
The Brazil international was included in Antonio Conte’s starting line-up ahead of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata and January signing Olivier Giroud.
Willian justified his inclusion with the opener in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona after the South American hit the woodwork twice in the first half of the last-16 clash.
The South American playmaker managed to outshine world-class talents such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the first-leg clash despite finding his first-team opportunities limited this term.
Indeed, Willian has only started 13 Premier League games and three Champions League fixtures after falling behind Eden Hazard and Pedro Rodriguez in the pecking order.
However, the 28-year-old has sparkled when selected in the Chelsea FC team with 11 goals and seven assists in four competitions.
Former Chelsea FC midfielder Lampard shed light on why Willian has struggled to tie down a regular starting spot under current Blues boss Antonio Conte.
“When you talk about him not playing and a level of consistency from him… you want to see him do that all the time,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“He’s a victim of the structure of the team because Pedro’s been impressive and Eden Hazard’s going to play pretty much every game.
“It’s been up to him to show he’s the man. I don’t think he’s always done it but on that form, he’s one of the top players.”
Chelsea FC won the Premier League title with two games to spare last term after the Blues finished seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur.
Conte signed Ross Barkley, Emerson Palmieri and Giroud in the January transfer window.
