Martin Keown has warned Chelsea FC and Manchester United need a big performance in the Champions League next week to lift their season.

The Premier League clubs have made a strong start to the last-16 stage last week after Manchester City were 4-0 winners at Swiss side Basel and Tottenham Hotspur came from 2-0 down to rescue a 2-2 draw with Serie A giants Juventus on Tuesday night.

Liverpool FC were resounding 5-0 winners against Porto in Portugal on Wednesday night to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side on the brink of a quarter-final place.

Premier League title holders Chelsea FC will welcome La Liga leaders Barcelona in the first leg of their last-16 clash at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night before Manchester United make the trip to Sevilla a day later.

The Blues have lost two of their last three Premier League games but the west London side did end their losing streak with a 3-0 win over 20th-placed West Brom at Stamford Bridge last week.

Manchester United have suffered defeat in two of their last three Premier League outings following a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur before Newcastle United beat Jose Mourinho’s men 1-0 at St James’ Park.

Former Arsenal defender Keown highlighted the importance of the Champions League to both Chelsea FC and Manchester United.

“Manchester United and Chelsea need strong performances in the Champions League next week to lift their seasons but will have been encouraged by the emphatic displays of the other English teams,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
