Pundit: 18-year-old is the future of Chelsea FC
Jason Cundy raves about Callum Hudson-Odoi after the teenager signed a new long-term contract with Chelsea FC
Jason Cundy has claimed that Callum Hudson-Odoi is the “future” of Chelsea FC and has praised the Blues for tying him down to a new contract.
Hudson-Odoi finally put pen to paper on a new long-term contract with the Blues last week after the relentless speculation about his future over the last few months.
The 18-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Blues to keep him at the club until 2024 as the west London side successfully managed to secure his future.
And Cundy has expressed his delight at the fact that Chelsea FC were able to tie one of their most promising young players down to a new deal.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy said: “He is the future, he has shown the quality he has got, he’s a full international.
“For me, he starts [when he’s fit], he starts wide of the three, left or right.
“It depends what formation you play but if you’re playing a three up top, he can either play on the left or the right.
“So he’ll cut in on the right or cut in [on the left], generally on the right-hand side.
“He can’t play down the middle, I’ve not seen him play there, I’m sure given an opportunity [he could]. But he is the future of the football club and it is brilliant news.
“This is probably the best, you talk about Chelsea’s transfer ban, this is the best signing Chelsea could have made in this transfer window.
“For him to have left would have been devastating, so he’s signed down.
“He’s a good lad as well, he’s down to earth, he’s a nice boy to talk to. Very confident, he’s got a nice manner, nice way about him. I’m delighted for him.”
Hudson-Odoi is currently working on his fitness levels as he bids to return to action following a lengthy lay-off with an Achilles injury.
Chelsea FC are in League Cup action on Wednesday night when they host Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues will then switch their attentions back to Premier League affairs and their home clash with Brighton and Hove Albion in west London on Saturday afternoon.
Chelsea FC are aiming to remain in the top four this season after they finished third last term under Maurizio Sarri.
