Ex-striker tips Chelsea FC signing to help Eden Hazard flourish
Chris Sutton explains why he thinks Olivier Giroud will help Eden Hazard hit top gear for Chelsea FC
Chris Sutton believes that Chelsea FC’s signing of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal in January will help bring out the best from Eden Hazard.
The Blues completed a deal to bring the 31-year-old France forward to Stamford Bridge at the end of the mid-season window as Giroud left Arsenal in search of some regular first-team football.
The French forward scored his first goal for the Blues when he netted in their 4-0 win over Hull City in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge last week.
Giroud will be hoping to be involved when Chelsea FC host FC Barcelona in the first leg of their crunch Champions League clash in the last 16 on Tuesday night.
Sutton is clearly a keen admirer of the former Arsenal star and feels that his presence in the team will help the likes of Hazard hit top gear.
Speaking to BT Sport, Sutton said: “I think Eden Hazard is better suited to playing as a number 10 or off the left-hand side.
“They need a proper number nine, a focal point, and Olivier Giroud gives them that. They had Alvaro Morata but he’s had injury problems.
“I think it’s a good piece of business and I think Hazard, Pedro Rodriguez and Willian will benefit from having that focal point.”
Chelsea FC are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table as they at least chase a top-four finish in Antonio Conte’s second campaign in charge at the club.
The Blues won the Premier League title in style last season but have struggled to find consistent form in the top flight this time around.
