Maurizio Sarri has hinted that Gary Cahill could leave Chelsea FC in the January transfer window after his lack of playing time at the club.

Cahill has found his first team opportunities under Sarri to be severely restricted this season since the Italian took over from Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge back in July.

The 32-year-old has only played 21 minutes of Premier League football so far this season and he has clearly struggled to win over his new boss at the west London club.

His lack of playing time this season is bound to prompt speculation that Cahill could seek a move away from Chelsea FC in the January transfer window.

Sarri was quizzed about Cahill’s situation before Chelsea FC’s Europa League clash against Vidi on Thursday night, and the Blues boss delivered an honest update about the centre-half’s future.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Wednesday, Sarri said: “I respect him very much. He has won everything with this club. I have to respect him, then I have to do my job. For every match I have to choose, and for me it’s not easy to put him on the bench.

“Maybe he is the best of our defenders inside the box, but I have to think our CBs usually play about 100 or 110 balls in a match, so I need very technical defenders.

“It’s not my decision. It is up to him and the club, because he is in his last year of contract so he has to decide for a new contract here or with another club.

“You know for over-30s the club usually offers only one-year contracts. If he has an offer of three years [from elsewhere] he can decide on something else.

“It doesn’t depend on whether I am sentimental or not!”

Chelsea FC will now turn their attentions back towards Premier League affairs and their trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon.

The west London side are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table after their impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
