Glen Johnson is tipping Chelsea FC to finish in the top four this season.
The Blues have made a stuttering start to the new campaign after having suffered a 4-0 loss to Manchester United in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford last weekend.
Chelsea FC also suffered a disappointing defeat on penalties by Liverpool FC on Wednesday night as Jurgen Klopp’s side lifted the Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul.
The west London side are now preparing for their home clash against Leicester City in front of their home fans on Sunday afternoon in their first Premier League game at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard.
And despite their stuttering start, former Chelsea FC man Johnson is tipping the Blues to finish in the top four this term.
Speaking in an interview quoted by the Daily Express, Johnson said: “It’s been a tough start to life back at Chelsea for my old team-mate Frank Lampard, but I think the heavy defeat at Old Trafford might be what was needed as a wake-up call for him and the team to realise the scale of the job they face.
“Despite not getting the result they wanted, it was a much better performance against Liverpool in the Super Cup.
“I don’t think Frank will be too tough on his squad as he knows he must keep them onside and get performances out of them.
“I’m confident he can get things right there in the long run. He’s a strong character, and I still fancy them to reach the top four this season which, all things considered, would be an amazing achievement for them.”
Chelsea FC brought in Lampard as Maurizio Sarri’s successor back in July after the Italian opted to leave Stamford Bridge to take over at Juventus.
The Blues – who finished third and won the Europa League last season – were banned from signing new players by Fifa in the summer but managed to bring in Christian Pulisic and Mateo Kovacic in pre-arranged deals.
