Paul Merson discusses Chelsea FC’s title hopes this season
Paul Merson discusses why Chelsea FC should be focused on catching Man City at the top of the table
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea FC should be focusing on catching Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
The Blues are currently getting used to life under new boss Maurizio Sarri after his appointment as Antonio Conte’s successor at Stamford Bridge back in July.
Chelsea FC have made a strong start to the new campaign, with the Blues having won five and drawn one of their opening six games to leave them amongst the early pace-setters in the Premier League.
Sarri recently said that his side are around a year away from being able to compete with the likes of Liverpool FC at the top of the Premier League table.
However, Merson feels that the Blues should be targeting defending champions Manchester City rather than looking at Merseyside outfit Liverpool FC.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “In that interview, I would have been saying Man City. The team you’ve got to aim for is City. They are the ones everybody has got to catch.
“I can understand what he’s saying about them being a year away. When you look at the defence, you have David Luiz in a back four you know he’s going to make a mistake sooner or later.
“And then there’s Alonso at left-back and he plays like a left-back number 10 if I’m being honest. He just goes and does what he wants to do – when you see the highlights and there’s a simple ball out to the right he’s 25 yards further up the pitch.
“That can’t happen and when they play against a top team, like they did against Arsenal, who could have scored six or seven. When they go and play against Man City and Liverpool, I’d be shocked if they got anything out of those games.”
Chelsea FC are aiming to break back into the top four at the very least this season after they finished fifth and won the FA Cup under Conte last term.
The Blues will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge in the top flight as they look to try and close the two-point gap to Jurgen Klopp’s men.
