Frank Lampard has his say on Michy Batshuayi's role in the Chelsea FC team this season
Frank Lampard has insisted that Chelsea FC will “need” Michy Batshuayi up front this season.
The Belgium international scored twice in the development squad’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Monday night and will be hoping to hold down a spot in the first team this season.
With the European transfer window still open, Batshuayi has been linked with a potential move away from Chelsea FC due to his lack of playing time.
However, Lampard has now insisted that he wants the forward to stay at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place in the first team this season.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Sky Sports, Lampard said: I thought it was a good performance in terms Michy got the fitness work that he needed out of the game.
“He scored two good goals – two very good finishes – and I thought he worked hard. That’s exactly what the game was there for for him.
“As I said before here and I’ll say on the training pitch: we need Michy. We need the competition up front with the three strikers that we have.
“As I said before if we’d have been more clinical in front of goal we possibly could have had three wins. The competition is there, and that’s the challenge for the strikers.
“We work hard on the training ground as a team to create and also to finish. I used to love practising my finishing in training.
“What I have got is great attitude in the three strikers. But others in the squad also always want to stay out, want to work harder.”
Chelsea FC will return to Premier League action next Saturday when they host Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side are aiming to try and remain in the top four this season after they finished in third place and won the Europa League title under Maurizio Sarri last term.
The Blues opted to bring in Lampard as their new manager back in July after Sarri left Stamford Bridge to take over at Juventus.
Chelsea FC have not won the Premier League title since their triumph under Antonio Conte back in 2017.
