Olivier Giroud has revealed that Robert Pires told him that a move to Chelsea FC would suit his game after his switch from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The French striker has been settling into life at Stamford Bridge after opting to leave the Gunners and sign for their London rivals.
Giroud had found his playing time at Arsenal to be limited this season and the 31-year-old was keen to seek the opportunity for regular spots in the starting line-up in the lead-up to this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
The forward has scored one goal in all competitions since his move and has been deployed regularly up front as a target man by Antonio Conte.
And Giroud has now lifted the lid on how some advice from former Arsenal players helped to convince him that a move across London was the right one for him.
Speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe, Giroud said: “Some football legends, such as Robert Pires, who’s a friend, Freddy Ljungberg or even some former Chelsea payers have said to me that Chelsea’s game would suit me because they have always played with a big forward up front and they cross the ball a lot.
“We have a set-up that allows us to go down the flanks or link up through the middle with the No. 10s, who bounce off the centre-forward who is a point of reference in line with the coach’s demands.”
Giroud will be hoping to feature for Chelsea FC when the Blues return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table as they look to break back into the top four before the end of the season.
