Frank Lampard believes Edin Dzeko would bring something different to the Chelsea FC team.

The AS Roma striker has emerged as Chelsea’s top target to improve their attacking options in the January transfer window.

The Blues were initially linked with some surprise names such as West Ham striker Andy Carroll, Burnley forward Ashley Barnes and Stoke City target man Peter Crouch.

However, Dzeko is the leading candidate to bolster Antonio Conte’s attacking line-up after it emerged the Blues are looking to complete a swoop for the Roma man and his team-mate Emerson Palmieri.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina international won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup during four and a half seasons at Manchester City.

Dzeko has been in scintillating form in the Champions League this term and scored twice in a 3-3 draw with Chelsea in the group stage.

Former Chelsea striker Lampard is confident that Dzeko is a good solution to Chelsea’s problems up front.

“Carroll and Crouch are not the kind of names Chelsea have gone for in the past,” Lampard told the Evening Standard. “But January is a tough one and Sanchez is a one-off.

“The majority of the time you’re looking at making minor adjustments If it’s a Crouch or Carroll, it’s just a back-up but Dzeko is something different.

“He is a very good player, an all-round striker with all the attributes. He can hold the ball up.

“In terms of investing heavily, that will come in the summer. It’s very easy to say that Crouch and Carroll are not Chelsea signings but it’s not an indication of where Chelsea are going.

“It is more a sign that the manager doesn’t think they strengthened enough last summer.”

Alvaro Morata moved to Chelsea from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window for a club-record £58m transfer.

The Spain international has struggled with a loss of confidence and ever-increasing fatigue over the past few weeks.
