New Chelsea FC manager Frank Lampard explains decision to add Claude Makelele and Didier Drogba to his coaching staff
Frank Lampard has lifted the lid on his decision to add Blues legend Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele to his Chelsea FC coaching staff.
The former England international was unveiled as the new Chelsea FC manager on Thursday after weeks of speculation linking Lampard with the role.
The 41-year-old will fill the void left by Maurizio Sarri little over a year after Lampard started his managerial career at Derby County.
The retired midfielder led the Rams to the Championship play-off final in his first season in charge before Chelsea FC lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Lampard is Chelsea FC’s record goal-scorer and one of the west London club’s most decorated players after an incredible haul throughout his 13-year career at Stamford Bridge.
The new Chelsea FC boss has brought former Blues midfielder Jody Morris after the pair worked together at Derby.
But Lampard has also added Drogba and Makelele to his Chelsea FC coaching staff ahead of the new Premier League season.
Speaking at his media conference on Thursday, Lampard explained his decision to appoint Drogba and Makelele to a coaching role.
“Didier, Petr and Makelele,” Lampard said.
“What I want to do is bring in people not just because they played for the club but because they feel the club and want to be here with incredible work ethic.
“Jody Morris is coming with me as assistant head coach. We have a close relationship. He has a great link with the academy, who were successful. We have a huge loyalty. Chris Jones as well, he will be with me as a coach. We know each other very well.”
Chelsea FC won the Europa League last season thanks to a 4-1 victory over Arsenal in Baku at the end of May.
The Blues finished in third spot in the Premier League table last season.
