Sky Sports pundit urges Chelsea FC to replace 31-year-old

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith doesn't believe Gonzalo Higuain has a future at Chelsea FC beyond the summer

Gonzalo Higuain isn’t the answer for Chelsea FC up front, according to Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith.

The Argentina international completed a loan move to Chelsea FC from Serie A giants Juventus in the January transfer window following an underwhelming stint at AC Milan.

Chelsea FC manager Maurizio Sarri was thought to have been a big admirer of Higuain from their time together at Napoli, when the South American netted 36 goals in 35 league games.

The 31-year-old was unable to rekindle that type of form at Stamford Bridge and Higuain finished the season with five goals in 18 games in all competitions.

Now, former Arsenal striker Smith warned the Blues that Higuain needs to be replaced in the Chelsea FC side following his poor performances.

“The centre-forward position is the area I think. I don’t think Gonzalo Higuain is the answer, he is not mobile enough, and Maurizio Sarri doesn’t seem to have much faith in Olivier Giroud,” Smith told Sky Sports.

He continued: “There’s not too much that needs doing. If Pulisic settles, which isn’t a given, then that will give them some good pace and width.”

Chelsea FC could lose their talisman Eden Hazard to Real Madrid this summer given the Belgium international has less than 12 months left to run on his current deal.

Sky Sports pundit Smith doesn’t expect the Blues to replace Hazard if the 28-year-old finally secures his move to the La Liga giants this summer.

“Much will depend on whether Hazard goes and they have the transfer ban. I wouldn’t imagine they would be looking to replace Hazard directly as they have Callum Hudson-Odoi coming back and Christian Pulisic joining already,” Smith added.

Chelsea FC will take on Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku later this month as Sarri looks to win a trophy in his first season in charge of the west London side.
