Jamie Redknapp has described Chelsea FC’s decision to sell Diego Costa as a “monumental mistake”.

Chelsea have struggled with their lack of options up front in the 2017-18 season to undermine their attempt at defending their title.

The west London side signed Alvaro Morata in a £58m transfer from La Liga giants Real Madrid last summer before allowing Costa to return to Atletico Madrid.

The combative Spanish forward scored 20 goals in each of Chelsea FC’s title-winning campaign under Jose Mourinho and then Conte.

However, Morata has struggled with injuries and a loss of form despite scoring eight goals in his opening seven games for the Blues.

Chelsea FC signed France international Olivier Giroud in a £21m deal from Arsenal in the January transfer window to add more depth up front for the defending champions.

Former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp believes Conte should have stuck with Costa despite their difficult working relationship.

“It was a monumental mistake to get rid of Costa. Whatever way you look at it,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports.

“He was a nuisance. He was hard to handle. He was hot headed. But he made the difference. You look at the number of the games they’ve lost where he could have come up with a goal.”

Costa moved to Atletico Madrid on loan back in September with view to a permanent transfer at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League season.

The controversial Spanish forward spent three seasons at Stamford Bridge but Costa was a controversial figure both on and off the pitch.
