Frank Lampard opens up about Olivier Giroud’s future at Chelsea FC
Chelsea FC boss Frank Lampard says he's prepared to have an honest conversation with Olivier Giroud
Frank Lampard says he is prepared to have a “clear and honest conversation” with any player who wants to discuss their future at Chelsea FC, including Olivier Giroud.
The France international has fallen down the pecking order at the west London side this season following the emergence of Tammy Abraham.
The 22-year-old has been a revelation in the Premier League following his prolific start to life under new Blues boss Lampard.
Abraham had scored eight goals in the Premier League so far this season heading into Saturday’s clash with Watford, including a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The England striker has also found the net in the Champions League to highlight his ability to adapt to different competitions.
Giroud has been limited to one start and three substitute appearances in the Premier League to raise questions about his future at the club.
The former Arsenal striker was overlooked for a starting spot in Chelsea FC’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
Lampard opted to go with Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi ahead of Giroud to suggest the World Cup winner is third choice at the west London side.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Friday, Lampard gave an update on Giroud’s situation at Stamford Bridge:
“It is difficult for me and it is difficult for them [Batshuayi and Giroud] – we both have our jobs so it doesn’t feature in my thinking.
“I have care for all the players. I have to pick the squad as I see it for the best of Chelsea as they do for their countries.
“I have got three strikers to pick from and I have to make the choices. Again I can’t complain about any of their attitudes.
“Things will look different and that is where you need professionalism. Between those three I have had it from all of them.
“I would always have a conversation with a player who says they don’t want to play for the football club, whoever they are.
“That is something where I would have a clear and honest conversation with them. We are not at that point yet so it is not one to discuss right now.”
Chelsea FC signed Giroud from Arsenal in the 2018 January transfer window.
