Paul Merson has criticised Chelsea FC’s failure to sign real quality in the summer after their Premier League title success.

The Blues are in a strong position to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season given their current third-place standing.

Chelsea FC, though, are 15 points behind runaway leaders Manchester City to make a title defence an unlikely prospect.

The west London side signed six players in the summer transfer window, including club-record signing Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid.

However, Chelsea FC sold two-time title winners Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic to weaken their starting line-up.

Antonio Conte has made no secret of his desire to add more quality players to his Chelsea FC squad.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson slammed the Chelsea FC board for failing to reinforce the Blues team with some top-class additions.

“I say it all the time,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“There is a fast food restaurant on the high street. They’re biggest one in the world. They sell more hamburgers and more chips than anyone else. They still do adverts. That’s my point.

“When you win something, you still have to go again and buy players.”

Chelsea FC signed England international Ross Barkley in a £15m deal from Premier League rivals Everton earlier in the January transfer window.

The Blues will take on La Liga giants Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 as Conte looks to win the competitions for the first time.
