Chelsea’s Gary Cahill: I want to make up for FA Cup final ‘sickener’

Gary Cahill admits missing Chelsea’s FA Cup final victory over Liverpool was a “sickener” – but the Blues defender is hoping to make up for that disappointment by helping his side to victory over Bayern Munich.
The 26-year-old joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers during the January transfer window in a £6m deal, and the England international has already featured 18 times for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
However, Cahill was forced off with a hamstring injury during the second leg of Chelsea’s semi-final clash against Barcelona and missed their FA Cup triumph at Wembley.
But the former Aston Villa defender, who returned to first-team training this week, is now aiming to help the Blues win the Champions League at the Allianz Arena.
“It was a massive blow for me to miss the FA Cup final,” said Cahill.
“I was sick when I got the injury because I knew that was going to be the case straightaway.
“I tried to get back [for the FA Cup final] but there was never any chance of that.
“It was a sickener for me because it would have been a big moment in my career. So I’m looking to make this a big one too.”
One Chelsea defender who will definitely not feature in Roberto Di Matteo’s plans against Bayern is captain John Terry.
The 31-year-old England centre-half is serving a ban after receiving a straight red card for lashing out at Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez in Chelsea’s semi-final triumph at Camp Nou.
But Cahill believes Terry can still contribute to a memorable European night for Chelsea, claiming that the skipper’s experience and leadership which will prove invaluable in the build-up to the final.
“We will miss him in the obvious ways,” added Cahill.
“The quality he provides first and foremost, and then the leadership that goes along with that.
“He’s a big presence in our team and in our squad. But like he spoke about the other night, he won’t be playing but he’ll be there in the dressing room and all the build-up and [will play] a big part in the day.”
