Steven Gerrard: Antonio Conte could quit Chelsea, he doesn’t look happy
The former Liverpool FC captain believes Antonio Conte could leave Chelsea at any time
Steven Gerrard admits he wouldn’t be surprised if Antonio Conte quit Chelsea.
The Blues manager has endured a testing 2017-18 season so far following unforeseen losses to Burnley, Crystal Palace and West Ham United to lose significant ground on their title rivals Manchester City.
Defending champions Chelsea lost 1-0 to the Premier League leaders at Stamford Bridge following Kevin De Bruyne’s second-half winner against his former club at the end of September.
The west London side won their second Premier League title in three seasons last term but first under Conte following his appointment at Stamford Bridge back in 2016.
The Chelsea manager struck an agitated figure during the title holders’ 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town despite goals from Tiemoue Bakayoko, Willian and Pedro Rodriguez.
Conte has discussed his dissatisfaction with Chelsea’s transfer policy on a number of occasions since the summer after the Italian missed out on some top targets.
Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard believes something is giving Conte the hump behind the scenes at the defending Premier League champions which could ultimately lead to his departure.
“I just get the impression at any given time he could walk out of Chelsea. He never seems totally happy to me,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“It was a great win for him tonight but he wasn’t smiling. It seems there is something behind the scenes that is really upsetting him.”
Chelsea signed six players in the summer transfer window following the additions of Bakayoko, Davide Zappacosta, Alvaro Morata, Danny Drinkwater, Willy Caballero and Antonio Rudiger.
