Antonio Conte urged to start Chelsea signing in midfield alongside Blues duo
Former England boss Steve McClaren believes Ross Barkley will do well in the Chelsea team alongside Cesc Fabregas and N'Golo Kante
Steve McClaren believes Ross Barkley will slot into the Chelsea midfield alongside Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante.
The Premier League title holders completed a £15m transfer swoop for the Everton midfielder in the January transfer window.
Barkley will bolster Chelsea’s midfield options and add more creativity to the middle of the park for Antonio Conte.
Indeed, summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko has struggled since his £40m move from AS Roma, while N’Golo Kante is a defensive-minded player.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has questioned where Barkley will fit into Conte’s first-team plans given his inconsistent form.
However, ex-England and Newcastle manager McClaren believes Barkley could provide attacking thrust in midfield alongside Fabregas and Kante.
“Fabregas, Kante and Barkley,” McClaren told Sky Sports.
“I think Barkley could be the runner, scoring goals. It could be a good midfield three.”
The former Everton midfielder netted 21 times in 150 games in the Premier League.
The England international, who has not featured at all this season due to a hamstring injury, was named Everton young player of the year in 2013 and 2014.
Barkley scored 27 times in 179 games in all competitions during his eight-season spell in the Everton first team.
