Alvaro Morata has admitted that he is already feeling the pressure of his price tag after his big-money transfer to Chelsea from Real Madrid this summer.
The Spanish forward became Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer last month when he penned a five-year contract with the Blues in a deal believed to be worth around £58m.
The transfer came as something of a surprise to many because Morata was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United before Chelsea won the race for the Spain international.
Morata made his competitive debut for Chelsea last weekend when he came on as a late substitute in the Blues’ clash with Arsenal in the Community Shield.
However, his debut did not go particularly well, as he failed to make an impact, before missing his penalty in the shootout as the Gunners triumphed over their London rivals.
And the 24-year-old admits that he has already faced criticism following his switch to west London.
Morata told Marca, as quoted by Metro: “I admit it’s a very important amount (the fee) but I have personality to play quietly and go my way.
“I have only two pre-season games, 15 official minutes and a failed penalty [in the Community Shield’s loss to Arsenal] … and they’re already killing me, so I know what’s ahead.
“It is the price that must be paid for such a large transfer. And it’s something that motivates me and makes me work harder every day, to spend an hour every day in the Sports City training. I know now twice as many people look at me.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for their Premier League opener against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, when Morata could make his first appearance in the top flight since his transfer.
