Paul Merson has warned Chelsea that they could be in big trouble if Alvaro Morata’s hamstring injury keeps him out of action for more than five games.

The Spanish striker is currently working on his fitness levels at the west London club’s training base at Cobham as he bids to recover as quickly as possible from the muscular problem he picked up during the first half of the 1-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend.

It remains to be seen exactly how long Morata will be out for as Chelsea are yet to officially confirm the extent of the problem.

However, he could be out of action for a number of weeks as he bids to work his way back to full fitness as quickly as possible.

And although former Arsenal star Merson reckons that Michy Batshuayi could fill in for Morata for a few games, he warned that the Belgian will not be capable of leading the line in the long term.

Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “Chelsea will be hoping Alvaro Morata’s injury is not serious because losing him is a big blow.

“I’ve always said Michy Batshuayi will do a job for four or five games but any longer than that and they’re in trouble.

“He won’t win you the league but he’ll do a job, so hopefully they will get through however long Morata is out for. It doesn’t sound like a long-term one.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action after the international break with a crunch clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Blues find themselves in fourth place in the table and six points behind the leaders Manchester City.
