Antonio Conte has admitted that Alvaro Morata is struggling for confidence after the striker missed a number of chances to score in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The Spanish striker had at least three clear-cut chances to net for Conte’s men at The Emirates but was guilty of spurning the opportunities during the exciting game.

Goals from Marcos Alonso and Eden Hazard had put Chelsea 2-1 up following Jack Wilshere’s equaliser, but Hector Bellerin netted a late equaliser to earn a point for the home side.

Morata has now drawn blanks in his last two Premier League appearances for Chelsea but he has still made a relatively strong start to life at Stamford Bridge following his move from Real Madrid last summer.

The 25-year-old has netted 10 goals and made four assists in 19 Premier League games and seems to be adapting well to life in England.

However, Conte admits that Morata has some significant room for improvement after he drew another Premier League blank against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Conte said of Morata: “This is not a lucky period for him because at the last game versus Stoke I said it is very important for the striker to have the chance to score, and here today he had chances to score but it is football.

“I am very happy for his commitment and his effort for the team, this is the most important for me but for the striker it is important to score because then your confidence is up.

“In this case his confidence can do down but he is very young and he has to continue to work to improve and he will see that the goal is coming.”

Chelsea return to action on Saturday with an FA Cup third-round clash against Norwich City as they look to progress to the fourth round.
