Jamie Carragher believes that Chelsea could finish in second place in the Premier League table this season in Antonio Conte’s second campaign in charge.

The Blues have been in decent form this season but Manchester City’s dominance at the top of the table has left them a staggering 16 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men after 22 games of the new campaign.

Chelsea won the title in style in Conte’s first campaign in charge last season but they did not have the distraction of European football as they were able to concentrate purely on domestic affairs.

The west London side will take on Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League next month as they bid to try and reach the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite club competition.

Chelsea are currently a point behind second-placed Manchester United in the race for a top-four spot, but Carragher feels that the Blues could well leapfrog Jose Mourinho’s men and end up ahead of the Red Devils.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: “I think they could finish second.

“You look at the job that Conte’s done over a two-year period, considering that Chelsea finished 10th the season before… to do that and then be the closest challengers to Manchester City this season [would be a good achievement].”

Chelsea are currently preparing for their FA Cup third-round clash against Norwich City on Saturday.

The Blues reached the final of the competition last season but were beaten by Arsenal at Wembley back in May.
