Cesc Fabregas admits that he is hoping that this will be Chelsea’s year in the Champions League.

The Blues have only once before won Europe’s elite club competition – back in 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo.

Antonio Conte’s men have been in good form in Europe so far this season and have booked their place in the last 16 of the competition after some impressive group-stage displays.

Fabregas helped Arsenal reach the final in 2006, only to be defeated by his boyhood club Barcelona in the final.

The 30-year-old will be aiming to try and help Chelsea win the prestigious trophy this season as they look to make it a successful campaign under Antonio Conte.

And Fabregas admits that he is very much hoping that Chelsea can go far in the competition this season.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday at Cobham, Fabregas said: “It will be fantastic if I can get it [the Champions League trophy] but it is a difficult competition and I have been playing it for a long time.

“I have reached quite a few semi-finals, I lost the final in a very cruel way, but it is a competition you need to be lucky in, to be very consistent, very strong and hopefully it can be Chelsea’s year.

“We will try our best to be consistent enough to reach the final and hopefully win it.”

The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League takes place in Nyon on 11 December.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when they tackle West Ham United at the London Stadium.

The Blues are aiming to defend their title this season after having won the trophy in style last term under Conte.
