Graeme Souness sends message to Chelsea fans about Cesc Fabregas
Graeme Souness reflects on Cesc Fabregas' performance for Chelsea against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon
Graeme Souness believes that Cesc Fabregas is not capable of playing a more defensive midfield role for Chelsea.
The Spanish midfielder was restored to the starting line-up for Chelsea’s goalless draw with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon but he was unable to help his side find a winner against the Gunners.
Fabregas started alongside N’Golo Kante in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield as Antonio Conte opted to leave new signing Tiemoue Bakayoko on the bench for the west London side.
And former Liverpool man Souness feels that Fabregas is more suited to a role higher up the pitch.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Sunday’s game, Souness said: “I don’t think Cesc Fabregas can play in there as a proper midfield player.
“He’s terribly gifted when you put him further up and he delivers cute and clever passes.
“I thought they were going to boss the game on Sunday and they went with Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante. It didn’t work.
“First, you have to win the battle, get the ball – and then play your stuff. It didn’t work out for them.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action with a trip to the bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City on Saturday.
Before that, Conte’s side will host Nottingham Forest in the third round of the League Cup at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues, who have now not beaten Arsenal in three attempts, are aiming to defend their Premier League title and also triumph in the Champions League this season.
Chelsea kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag at Stamford Bridge in their group stage opener last week.
