Frank Lampard has described Nemanja Matic’s transfer to Manchester United form Chelsea as “strange” and is backing the Serb to be a success at Old Trafford.

The midfielder joined the Red Devils earlier this month as Manchester United third signing of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea opted to let Matic leave the club this summer after they brought in Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Matic made his competitive debut for Manchester United when the Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup last week.

Lampard admits he was somewhat surprised to see Chelsea sell Matic to a direct rival, however, the Blues’ all-time top goal-scorer is also backing Bakayoko to have a positive impact at Stamford Bridge this season.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sport Review, BT Sport pundit Lampard said: “I think Matic [himself] personally maybe wanted to move on. You respect that if that is the case.

“It’s just strange that he’s gone to a competitor. He’s going to strengthen Manchester United. You saw that in the Uefa Super Cup game – he’ll fit very well in there.

“He did that job for Chelsea with great tactical discipline. He’s very good at winning the ball back and moving the ball very well.

“It’s quite strange but Chelsea have always been thinking forward. They’ve been doing that for years by buying younger players and trying to improve them, and I think Bakayoko, if he keeps improving, he is going to be a serious signing.”

Chelsea are currently preparing for their Premier League opener against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as they look to get their title defence off to a winning start.

The west London side won a record 30 games on their way to winning the Premier League title this season.
