Pat Nevin: Chelsea didn’t miss David Luiz, 21-year-old looked very comfortable
The Chelsea legend talks up the performance of Andreas Christensen in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Manchester City
Pat Nevin believes Chelsea didn’t miss David Luiz during their 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday thanks Andreas Christensen’s composed performance at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old filled Luiz’s void in Antonio Conte’s team as the Brazil international served his three-match suspension following a sending off in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal last month.
The Danish defender performed admirably against the most-potent team in the Premier League as former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne scored a second-half winner at Stamford Bridge.
Christensen has already made six appearances in the Premier League this season to underline his promising potential in the Chelsea team.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Christensen was a more than capable replacement for Luiz and the retired Scotland international was impressed with the centre-half’s display against the Premier League leaders.
“Had we sneaked a goal at the end when we had the odd chance then I think many more people would have been talking up the Christensen performance,” Nevin told Chelsea’s website.
“There was a moment when he broke out of defence with the ball at his feet in the second half when he looked imperious.
“It is always good to have a centre-back being extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, and he certainly very rarely looks flustered.
“So in the circumstances David Luiz was missed slightly less than I would have expected for such a big game. I think most people believe that we now have another player who we would trust implicitly in any of the games coming up.”
Christensen got two seasons of regular first-team football under his belt at Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach between 2015 and 2017 to improve as a defender.
The Denmark international scored seven goals in 82 appearances in all competitions during his two-season loan spell at the German club.
The Chelsea defender has made 11 appearances for the Denmark national team since making his debut in 2015.
Conte has used the promising Danish star in nine games in the 2017-18 season so far.
