Cesc Fabregas sends message to Antonio Conte after Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal
Cesc Fabregas suggests that he deserved a place in the starting line-up for Chelsea against Arsenal on Saturday
Cesc Fabregas has suggested that he deserved a place in the starting line-up for Chelsea’s FA Cup final clash with Arsenal on Saturday.
The west London side slumped to a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Gunners in the final at Wembley as they missed out on the chance to win a domestic double this season.
Fabregas has found his first-team opportunities at Chelsea to be severely restricted this season and he only started 13 Premier League games under Antonio Conte.
However, the 30-year-old midfielder has delivered whenever called upon and has earned plenty of praise for his strong performances from the bench for the west London side.
Fabregas started Saturday’s final on the bench as Conte opted to play Nemanja Matic ahead of the former Arsenal captain.
The midfielder was then a second-half substitute as Chelsea slumped to defeat at Wembley.
And Fabregas feels that he could not have done more to try and earn a starting spot in the final this season.
Speaking to the Daily Express after the game, Fabregas said: “I thought I was playing very, very well in the last few months.
“I was in great form and it was a shame I didn’t start the game. I was playing very well and the team was winning, scoring a lot of goals and defending well.
“That is football, you have to accept decisions. It is a bad day and a shame because we wanted to win. The most important thing is the team didn’t win.
“Sometimes it is all about the coach’s decision. I don’t think I could have done much more this season, it is the coach’s decision and you have to respect that.
“I’m sure he wants the best for the team and if he thinks that is the way to go you have to go with it, we are a team. It is between him and me. I have nothing against Antonio, he has done a fantastic job.
“Of course every player wants to play more, it is in the genes of a winner and I am one of them. I’m here for whatever the team needs and I have shown that during the season.”
