Danny Murphy makes prediction about Chelsea in title race
The ex-Liverpool midfielder is refusing to discount Chelsea from the Premier League title race
Danny Murphy believes Chelsea will be involved in the latter stages of the Premier League title race this season.
The defending champions have already lost three games in their opening eight fixtures this term to raise serious questions about their ability to defend their top-flight crown.
Chelsea suffered a chastening 1-0 defeat at the hands of Premier League leaders Manchester City in their last top-flight fixture before the international break to leave Antonio Conte’s men seven points adrift of the two Manchester clubs.
They then lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
The Blues have won the title in two of the past three seasons under Jose Mourinho and then Conte to dominate the Premier League landscape in recent years.
However, the west London side face a tough assignment overhauling Manchester City and Manchester United given the strength of both Pep Guardiola and Mourinho’s teams.
But ex-Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Murphy believes Chelsea will be involved in the title race in the latter stages of the campaign despite their mixed start.
“I don’t think it’s over. I think Chelsea will come again,” Murphy told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“They will be better in terms of the team they had out that day. Chelsea will come back to normal and have a go.”
Chelsea signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
The Blues signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata, Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta.
