Jamie Redknapp has ruled out Chelsea retaining the Premier League title this season.

The defending champions suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.

Summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko cancelled out Cesar Azpilicueta’s own goal before Wilfried Zaha netted an added-time winner at the end of the first half.

Chelsea have lost back-to-back Premier League games following a 1-0 loss to leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge before the international break after Kevin De Bruyne’s winner.

The title holders started the season with a shock 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge in their Premier League opener.

Chelsea signed six players in the summer transfer window as Antonio Conte attempted to prepare for the demands of playing in both the Champions League and the Premier League.

The west London side are already nine points behind current leaders Manchester City in the title race to leave Chelsea with an uphill battle to reclaim their crown.

Former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Redknapp believes Chelsea won’t retain their title this term given the strength of the Manchester clubs.

“Can Chelsea win this year? No, I don’t think they can,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports.

Chelsea have won the Premier League title in two of the past three season under Jose Mourinho and then Conte last term.
