Paul Merson sends message to Chelsea fans about Man United signing
The Arsenal legend is still bemused by Chelsea's decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United
Paul Merson admits he is still shocked Chelsea made the decision to sell Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United.
Chelsea signed French midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco to increase competition for places in Conte’s midfield.
The Premier League champions sold the Serbia international in a £40m deal to the Red Devils last month despite strengthening their title rivals ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Matic played an important role in Chelsea’s Premier League title successes in 2015 and 2017 under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
The 29-year-old has already made a positive impact on the Manchester United team after being named man of the match in their 4-0 win against West Ham in their season opener.
The former Benfica midfielder has helped Mourinho’s side to secure victories over West Ham, Swansea City and Leicester City in their opening three Premier League games.
Chelsea completed a deadline day move to sign England midfielder Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City to provide more cover in midfield.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is still questioning why Chelsea made the decision to sell Matic to their direct title challengers Manchester United.
“It still shocks me really. No disrespect but they’ve brought in Danny Drinkwater,” Merson told Sky Sports News on Friday.
“I think he’s a good player but you’re talking about £10m more for Matic. It shocks me that he’s gone to a team that could win the league. They’re a danger to Chelsea.”
Manchester United have also signed Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are sitting two points clear of their closest title challengers Liverpool after three games.
