Pat Nevin replies when asked if Chelsea should have kept 20-year-old striker

Pat Nevin believes there is a case to suggest Chelsea should have kept Tammy Abraham at Stamford Bridge for the 2017-18 season.

The Blues allowed the promising 20-year-old striker to move to Swansea City on a season-long loan after signing Alvaro Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

England Under-21 international Abraham has scored four goals in eight games in the Premier League this season to underline his promising potential at the Liberty Stadium.

Abraham scored one goal in the League Cup to take his tally to five goals in all competitions since his decision to get some first-team football under his belt at the Welsh club.

Chelsea lost Alvaro Morata to injury last month as the Spanish forward suffered a hamstring problem during a 1-0 loss to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish forward has scored six goals in seven Premier League games but his understudy Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi has struggled to impress in Morata’s absence.

Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Abraham could have played a role in the absence of Morata but admitted that the English starlet needs regular first-team football.

“I have heard it said that having the option of Tammy Abraham as a reinforcement to Morata and Michy Batshuayi might have been helpful and there is a case for that, but on the downside would he really get much game time when others are fit?” Nevin told Chelsea’s website.

“Tammy and others are learning fast by playing first team football at a good level where they are.

“When he comes back, he and the club will want him to be a regular starter, not sitting warming a bench for months on end and learning very little of his trade at a vital time in his development.

“Happily, Alvaro should be back soon, very soon, so that is one short-term problem that could be solved pretty quickly.”

Abraham has scored five goals in 13 games for England’s Under-21 side.
