Jamie Redknapp delivers verdict on Chelsea signing: He’s different to Nemanja Matic
The Liverpool legend insists Chelsea signing Tiemoue Bakayoko is completely different to Nemanja Matic
Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on Tiemoue Bakayoko for the midfielder’s impressive Chelsea debut last weekend.
The Premier League champions signed the 23-year-old in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco last month following a standout campaign in the French top flight and the Champions League.
Bakayoko was unavailable for Chelsea’s loss to Arsenal on penalties in the Community Shield and the defending champions’ surprise 3-2 loss to Burnley in their Premier League opener at Stamford Bridge.
The French midfielder’s absence only served to further highlight the void left by Nemanja Matic after the Serbia international completed a £40m switch to title rivals Manchester United earlier this month.
However, Antonio Conte was forced to rush Bakayoko into the Chelsea team in the absence of suspended Cesc Fabregas for Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley last weekend.
Bakayoko impressed in the heart of the Chelsea team despite a limited pre-season as the midfielder slotted into the Blues team following his summer transfer.
Former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder Redknapp lavished praise on Bakayoko for his impressive Premier League bow ahead of the visit of Everton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“He did very well considering he hasn’t had a pre-season,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“There have been so many comparisons to Nemanja Matic. There has been talk about how important Matic was to Chelsea.
“He was probably a bit nervous about that. He was composed. He was powerful. He was completely different to Matic.”
Chelsea will get their Champions League campaign underway next month following a one-season absence.
The Blues have signed four players in the summer transfer window so far.
